Supply Chain Disruptions Happen !

According to a recent Accenture survey, three out of four supply chains regularly experience transportation related disruptions. Transportation disruptions are often unpredictable, reducing the value of your product and causing damage to a company's reputation of reliability. With this in mind, here are five reasons for sourcing contingencies that effectively manage transportation disruptions:

Reason 1.   Leaner Supply Chains

Let's face it, supply chains are getting leaner and distances are growing longer. Lean supply chains eliminate inventory that in the past created some buffer for unexpected events. Without that inventory, dealing with unexpected events and supply chain inconsistencies grows more urgent.

Reason 2.   Capacity Constraints

Truckload capacity has become critical for millions of companies that rely on the nations trucking networks to get their goods to market. Capacity constraints; although due to many reasons, has caused a shortage of drivers, rising operating costs, and a lack of adequate credit for carriers to replace aging equipment or expand their fleets. With capacity limited and demand increasing to procure trucks for freight, shippers who remain tactical rather than strategic in contingency planning are likely to encounter the most difficulty obtaining needed capacity.

Reason 3.   Supplier Delays

A monogamous relationship with a supplier is the exception, not the rule. Relying on one sole source is risky business. You may have an excellent relationship with your current supplier, if so, thats great! But always have another supplier on call to pick up where the last one left off, after all, if you want to ensure your supply chain solutions are successful, you have to have a plan-B, as sometimes, things dont work out the way you expected. Contingency planning is a BIG deal in the supply chain, and not just for disasters, but sometimes from the suppliers you work with every day.

Reason 4.   Lead-time Volatilities

Flexibility and quick response has become the norm. The days of long production runs, big backlogs and long lead times are becoming operations of the past. Customers are increasingly expecting shorter lead times for products configured exactly as specified and delivered on time, every time. The growing trend of  quick-response, no-excuses delivery has put many manufacturers in the position of having to conform or lose business to a competitor who has developed short cycle time capabilities.

Reason 5.   Transportation Service Failures

Consequently, shippers endure shoddy customer service, non-competitive pricing and repeated service failures rather than risk change. With many carriers offering similar services, one huge differentiator is the level of service that is provided by the carrier.

If the level of customer service offered by your carrier has slowly deteriorated over the course of your business dealings, it's time to source a carrier that's eager to provide you with stellar service. Transportation contingency planning has become a strategic imperative for manufacturers and distributors who understand that failure to get goods to market and deliver on promises can result in a loss of sales, long-term competitiveness and a reduction in shareholder value by as much as ten percent. So whether it’s transportation disruptions due to capacity shortages, supplier delays, shorter lead-times or transportation service failures:
